My Favorite Dance & Synthpop Artist
Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta (March 28, 1986), known by
her stage name Lady Gaga, is an American singer-songwriter, record producer,
activist, businesswoman, fashion designer and actress. Raised in New York City,
where she lives, Lady Gaga primarily studied at the Convent of the Sacred Heart
and momentarily joined to New York University's Tisch School of the Arts before
withdrawing to focus on her musical career. She soon began performing in the
rock music scene of Manhattan's Lower East Side.
Musically, Gaga takes influence from numerous musicians from
dance-pop singers like Madonna and Michael Jackson to glam rock artists like
David Bowie and Queen at the same time as employing the theatrics of artists
like Andy Warhol and of her musical theatre roots in performance. "Radio
Ga Ga" a Queen(rock band)´s song, inspired her stage name. Madonna who
admits that she sees herself reflected in Gaga.
Continually experimenting with new musical ideas and images,
Gaga's musical and performance style is the subject of much critics. She
professes that she is "liberating" herself by constantly reinventing
her sound and image, insisting that she has been drawn to such a practice since
her childhood. Vocally, Gaga possesses the range of a contralto and shows
"overwhelming expression, instinctive vocal phrasing, reminiscent chest
belts and animalistic vocal beats”. Gaga refuse to lip sync, and her range is
frequently compared to those of Madonna and Gwen Stefani.

Short History of Synthpop:
The
development of cheap polyphonic synthesizers, the definition of MIDI and the
use of dance beats, led to a more commercial and accessible sound for synthpop.
This, its adoption by the style-conscious acts from the New Romantic movement,
together with the rise of MTV, led to success for large numbers of British
synthpop acts, including Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet, in the United States.
Impacts:
Synthpop
helped to establish the place of the synthesizer as a major element of pop and
rock music, including house music and Detroit techno.
